RUSKIN - Feed the hungry, help wounded soldiers and enjoy an evening of fun during the Ruskin Woman's Club's old-fashioned hoedown and steak dinner, scheduled for Saturday at the Ruskin Elks Lodge.

Half the profits from the evening - tickets are $25 each - go to Heifer International, an organization that helps families move toward self-reliance by providing them with livestock both in the United States and abroad.

Other projects benefit, too, including the Sew Much Comfort program, which provides specially tailored clothing to wounded soldiers returning to this country.

"Heifer International is fighting to end hunger," said Sonja Council, membership chairwoman for the club. "We've supported them for years."

And for the past two years, the Ruskin club has been involved in Sew Much Comfort, a nationwide woman's club program that alters T-shirts using Velcro, so they can be put on without having to pull them over the head. The program also makes pants and athletic shorts with wider legs to accommodate braces or prosthetics, said Sue Prophet, who heads the effort in Ruskin.

"Since the beginning, our club has done approximately 850 pieces," Prophet said. "There are 15 members involved, and three of them sew." A few members of the public have also chipped in to help sew, she said.

Once the clothing is altered, it is shipped to the woman's club headquarters in Ohio and then distributed where needed, Prophet said.

Money from the hoedown will help pay for the clothing.

The evening will include a steak dinner with salad and Ruskin tomatoes, baked potato, a homemade dessert, tea and coffee. There will also be a cash bar, a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing.
