RIVERVIEW - Parishioners at St. Stephen Catholic Church are urging members of the community to throw on their sneakers and join them in walking for a cure.
For the third year, the church is sponsoring Project Cure, a three-day walk to cure breast cancer, with pledge money going to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Tampa. The walk, which starts Friday, begins at 6 a.m. each day at the Bloomingdale East park on Nature's Way.
There is no minimum pledge amount and participants can walk as long or as little as they like, said Lisa Huetteman, one of the Project Cure organizers.
"Some people walk one lap. Others walk 60 miles," Huetteman said. "This is an invitation to the community to join us. Everyone can participate."
The church started Project Cure after several young mothers in the parish died from breast cancer. Since its inception, the program has raised $57,000. This year, the goal is to raise $50,000.
"It's not just about raising money," said Jean Weber, one of the Project Cure founders. "There's a great sense of camaraderie during the three-day event. Friends and neighbors cheer us on at the park or along the route. Some neighbors put out water, oranges and other snacks for walkers. Businesses donate lunch. It takes on a real party atmosphere."
Huetteman said about 100 people participated last year, but this year, they're hoping for even more.
