Neighbors: Take A Class Worthy Of A Monarch

RUSKIN - Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center, 4140 24th St. S.E., invites all interested, gentle spirits to a free, six-hour butterfly monitor training class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Akers Pence, a University of Florida researcher for the Florida Butterfly Monitoring Network, will lead the class.

Attendees are asked to commit to monitoring the lepidoptera monthly at either Camp Bayou or Cockroach Bay.

Luncheon Benefits Mary And Martha House

Residents of Kings Point and their guests are invited to the Queen's Luncheon, the first fashion show in Kings Point by the Mary and Martha House, at noon today in the Ballroom, 1900 Clubhouse Drive, Sun City Center.

Featured fashions will include items from the Graff and Erin London fall lines and clothing and accessories from the Mary and Martha House's thrift store. Proceeds will benefit the Mary and Martha House, which provides a safe haven for women in crisis and their children.

The store, 1009 First St. S.W., seeks merchandise to sell, including gently used clothing for children, women and men; household items; and furniture. Arrangements may be made with the store to pick up larger items from the donor.

Shopping hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Men Invited For Fellowship, Pot Luck

GIBSONTON - The men of First Baptist Church of Gibsonton, 9912 Indiana St., will hold a men's fellowship meeting and pot luck supper at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

All area men are invited to join them at the free event, which is being organized by Anthony Buchan.

A devotional message will be delivered by Dennis White. Prayer for the men's special intentions will follow White's talk.

Players Take 'Dearly Departed' On The Road

For the first time in its 28-year history, the Pelican Players will present a comedy show, "Dearly Departed," in two venues.

First, the show will take place in the Borini Theater in the Kings Point Clubhouse, 1900 Clubhouse Drive, Sun City Center, at 7 p.m. Saturday and at 1:30 and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Second, it will take place at the Riverside Club Golf & Boating Resort in the Landings Clubhouse, 2550 Pier Drive, Ruskin, at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 and 1:30 p.m. Nov. 23.

After each performance, board member Paul Hunt has arranged for audience members to meet and greet the performers.

Tickets are $9 per person for the show, which is directed by Judy Branch and produced by Chet Budziak.

"Dearly Departed" is one of Branch's favorite plays.

"My actors, from Apollo Beach, Wimauma, Ruskin and Sun City Center, are great. And the action and clever dialogue is fast and frequent and sure to keep you entertained," she said.

The story centers on a dysfunctional Southern family whose patriarch has just died. The play presents living and dying in the South as sometimes messy and often uproarious.

Drama students from East Bay, Riverview and Lennard high schools have been invited to attend Tech Night on Friday to tour the theater and meet the cast and director and musical director, Chuck Wirick.

Proceeds will go to the Pelican Players Scholarship Fund, which has donated more than $300,000 to area students since 1984. Winners receive $1,000 per semester for four years at whatever college they choose to attend.

Follies Auditions On Tap

SUN CITY CENTER - Auditions will be held for the Follies, an annual variety show produced by the Pelican Players, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Kings Point Clubhouse, 1900 Clubhouse Drive.

Acts and stagehands are needed. Soloists should bring sheet music for the accompanist.

Spain Is Subject Of Discussion

SUN CITY CENTER - Spain will be the topic of discussion of the International Forum of Sun City Center from 9:30 a.m. to noon Friday in the Atrium Building's Florida Room, 955 N. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Introductory remarks by the five panelists will last about 10 minutes, there will be a short break and then the audience will be able to comment or question. Dean Mahin, vice president for programs, will be the moderator.

Panelists will be Donald McNertney, information officer from 1970-74 at the U.S. Embassy in Madrid, who will share about the Franco dictatorship; Walter Clarke, counselor for political affairs at the Madrid embassy from 1989-92, who will talk about Spanish politics and Spain's relationship with the United States.

Sun City Center resident Carolyn Deming, who visited Spain during the 1970s, will talk about Spanish architecture; Misty Taylor, who has traveled yearly to Spain to visit her daughter, son-in-law and his parents, will focus on Spanish family life; and Marjorie Hile, program coordinator, who traveled to Spain in April 2007, will share from the perspective of a recent visitor.

Rivals To Watch Football Together

KINGS POINT - The Ohio Club of Sun City Center will host the Michigan Club at a Football Game Party featuring the Ohio State Buckeyes against the University of Michigan Wolverines.

The game will be broadcast on a large-screen projection television. The festivities will begin 90 minutes prior to kick off (the time of which has not yet been announced) Nov. 22 in the Kings Point Auditorium, 1900 Clubhouse Drive. .

Pizza, salad and dessert will be provided. Attendees may bring their choice of beverages.

The cost is $10.

SUN CITY CENTER - The Men's Club of Sun City Center will meet at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 19 in Community Hall, 1910 S. Pebble Beach Blvd.

They will hear from Jeff Knott, who wrote "Navigating the Healthcare Maze - What You Need to Know."

"His message is a wakeup call, meant to encourage a more responsible, proactive and consumer-oriented approach to personal and family health," said Jack Fischer, publicity coordinator for the club.

Women's Concerns Topic Of Woman's Club

SUN CITY CENTER - Women's concerns were the topic of the October meeting of the Sun City Center Woman's Club.

Speaking to the women were Nan Dorsey, chairwoman of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Rally that fights breast cancer; Jan Falcione, manager of the Mary and Martha House; and Linda Hess, community relations manager of The Spring of Tampa Bay.

At the meeting, club president Jean Rideout presented a $300 check to Dorsey for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Rally.

Acrylic-Yupo Demonstration

SUN CITY CENTER - The Art Club of Sun City Center will hold its free acrylic-Yupo demonstration by award-winning Central Florida artist Carol Frye at 1 p.m. Monday in the Rollins Theater, 970 Cherry Hills Drive.

Yupo paper is a plastic sheet that may be used as a canvas for media such as watercolors and acrylics.

Free Caregiver Education

TAMPA - Two free caregiver seminars will be presented at Weinberg Village Assisted Living Residence, 13005 Community Campus Drive.

"Is It Me or My Memory? Changes over the Lifespan," will be presented at 10 a.m. Tuesday by Seema Eichler, doctor of philosophy, clinical neuropsychologist and psychology coordinator for the Tampa General Hospital Rehabilitation Center.

"Understanding Parkinson's - Patient and Caregiver Issues," will be given at 10 a.m. Nov. 25 by Eden Feldman, who has a master's in social work and works at the University of South Florida Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center.
