RUSKIN - Fresh air and barbecue are on the menu at the Camp Bayou Outdoor Center on Dec. 6 for its annual open house.
Wander through gopher tortoise habitat, chase a butterfly and meander along the Little Manatee River beginning at 9 a.m.
In the meantime, browse native plants for sale, participate in an archaeological dig, tour a recreated Native American village or visit the fossil museum.
The festivities last until 2 p.m. and include guided walking tours in the wetlands and highlands, wildlife art and aquatic exploration along the river. Admission is free, but some events require a small fee.
The barbecue dinner, an annual fundraiser for the outdoor center, is $10 per person. Vegetarian items will be available.
"My husband does the smoking, and I make all the sides, and we only make enough for 50 or 60, so come early," director Dolly Cummings warned.
Camp Bayou is a 160-acre preserve off State Road 674 at the end of 24th Street Southeast in Ruskin. It is a prime location for hikers, birders, butterfly enthusiasts and anyone who wants to fish in the Little Manatee River or just enjoy the view.
