RUSKIN - Lennard High varsity football coach George Edington recently picked up two wins for the price of one.

On Sept. 12, the Longhorns defeated Sickles High School 21-14, giving Edington his first win as a head coach at Lennard. The team came back from a 14-0 deficit by scoring three unanswered touchdowns and keeping Sickles scoreless during the final three quarters.

For his effort, Edington was also named the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach of the Week for the second week of the high school football season.

"We were happy to get the win and I'm excited about the award because it's something that'll help the school," Edington said.

Recipients of the coach of the week award receive $1,000 for their school's football program.

"We're probably going to use that money to buy more cleats, shirts and other equipment for some of our players who can't afford them," Edington said. "We'll probably also look into getting some better video equipment."

A Buccaneers Coach of the Year will be selected from the 10 weekly winners at the end of the season and will receive another $1,000.

In addition to the money, Edington and assistant coaches David New, Ron Sainsbury and Christian Yockey also received a tour of the Buccaneers' training facility.

The group also watched the Bucs practice and head coach Jon Gruden presented Edington with a certificate and a personalized football.

"It was pretty cool watching the Bucs go through their offensive and defensive walk-throughs," said Edington, whose team is off to a 3-1 start, the best in school history. "The award is nice, but our team has more work to do this season."
