Local Group To Mark White Cane Safety Day

TAMPA - The East Hillsborough Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, the Tampa Bay Chapter of the NFB and Hillsborough County will observe White Cane Safety Day with a march beginning at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at Joe Chillura Courthouse Square in downtown.

This event will draw attention to the traffic laws enacted to assist blind pedestrians. Florida's White Cane Law says that only "totally or partially blind or otherwise incapacitated" people may use white walking sticks tipped with red.

Whenever a pedestrian with such a cane or a guide dog is crossing or attempting to cross a public road, every driver approaching that intersection must stop fully before going through the intersection. Also, the absence of a cane or service animal does not relieve a driver of his responsibility to stop for a blind or disabled person.

Walkers will proceed along a three-quarter mile route through downtown Tampa, ending back at the starting point. Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa will present proclamations to marchers.

There will be live music by a blind musician. A free box lunch will be available for registered participants.

Registration is requested at www.blind411.org/volunteer .asp or by calling the National Federation of the Blind at (813) 626-2789 or by e-mailing president@blind411.org.
