Hitting The Road; Riding For A Cause

Published: October 8, 2008

TAMPA - An upcoming event that will benefit people with physical disabilities simply asks its participants to hop on a bike.

On Nov. 8-9, Tampa will host the second Ride Without Limits cycling event to benefit United Cerebral Palsy, an organization that supports the rights of any person with a disability.

Hundreds of riders from all over the Tampa area, including South Shore, are expected to participate in the 200-mile event, which will take the cyclists from Gadsen Park in south Tampa to Thonotosassa and back. The Florida ride is sandwiched between an October event in North Carolina and gathering in southern California this spring.

Each participant will be able to ride up to 100 miles each day and there will be transportation to nearby camps for those who can't finish.

Sean Keeney of Apollo Beach heard about the event on the radio from Jamie Derzypolski, a disc jockey on WBVM, 90.5 FM.

"Right now we're really trying to recruit other people in the area to join our team," said Keeney, who has participated in triathlons but is participating in Ride Without Limits for the first time. "It's a good cause, so we're also looking for donations and anyone interested in becoming a sponsor."

Each rider accepts a fundraising account upon registration and must have at least $500 in the account by the start of the event to participate. Riders must also have personal health insurance and 16- and 17-year-old cyclists must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is also registered in the event.

Those interested in participating but not in riding can register free as volunteers.
