RIVERVIEW - The event may have been small by some standards, but more than 200 people turned out with their dogs - and a cat - to Summerfield's first pet fair.
"I love animals," said organizer Chelsea Greene, program director at Summerfield Community Center, adding her boss, Joan Hennly, wanted her to do something related to pets.
Greene said the center had previously hosted a health fair and a pet-photo shoot.
"I just combined the two and ran with the idea," she said.
A variety of mostly South Shore businesses set up display tents outside.
As they highlighted their products and services, many vendors passed out fliers and brochures on hurricane preparedness for pets and gave away promotional items from their businesses. Visitors were eligible for lots of door prizes, as well.
"We wanted to see what was here and spend time with Dodger," said Phanit Kingsley, who came with her husband and their dog. "It's a great event."
Yolie McBrayer brought along her dog, Skittles, to give him some exercise. "I learned about camps for dogs," she said. Dog-sitting "is what I'll be needing."
The community center's next event will be a picnic Nov. 15. Admission is $3 for residents, $5 for guests. For details, call (813) 671-4568.
