APOLLO BEACH - The Roamin' Oldies Car Club invites auto aficionados to its monthly cruise-in from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Cherry's Bar & Grill, 6186 U.S. 41 N.
About 60 antique and collectible vehicles are usually on display. Disc jockey Joe Ferrante will play classic 1950s tunes during the event.
At the Aug. 7 cruise-in, spectators' votes were split between two cars for Cruiser of the Month: Sun City Center's Harry Oelgart's aqua 1937 Ford Club Cabriolet and Apollo Beach's Joel Lodes' laser-red 1933 Ford Victoria. Both owners have modernized their cars with air conditioning, power packages and stereo systems for routine use.
Members of three car clubs - the Roamin' Oldies, Braden Street Cruisers and Gulf Coast Corvette Club - raised more than $19,000 at a benefit car show and concert July 12 in Ellenton for 3-year-old Lexi Antorino of Palmetto. The girl was critically injured in a playground accident in December.
More than 160 cars, street rods and trucks were exhibited. Ferrante, Ken Brady of the Casinos, Billy "Elvis" Lindsey and Quick Change provided entertainment. Thompson's Auto Parts helped sponsor the event. The late Butch Scalzo of the Braden Street Cruisers bequeathed a 1962 Oldsmobile to be auctioned off at the benefit. The car brought in $9,500 for Lexi.

WAVES Install Officers, Make Some Changes
BRANDON - The Tampa Bay WAVES Unit 55 invites all women who are serving or have served in any of the military sea services to meet at 11 a.m. Saturday at Piccadilly Cafeteria, 1025 W. Brandon Blvd.
The meeting date and place are new.
New officers, elected in May, were installed June 14 at a luncheon that also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the unit, which was chartered in spring 1988, said Jeannette Green of Brandon, newly installed vice president.
Other new officers are Barbara J. McGuire of Brandon, president; Catherine Gerolimatos of Riverview, treasurer; and Ruby Homick of Apollo Beach, secretary.
At the installation meeting, member Joanne Nesmith received an award for her service as a Veterans Affairs Volunteer Services representative.
McGuire introduced the Rev. Merle Strickland, whose stint as a sailor in the U.S. Navy was interrupted by a call to seminary, after which he returned to serve 20 years as chaplain. He came "with a story of special interest to these Navy women veterans," said Green in an e-mail message.
In 1972, Strickland was serving at the Naval Officer Training Center in Newport, R.I., and was asked to write four lines of a verse for the Navy hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save."
Strickland's lines, which honor past, present and future women of the sea services, reads: "O God, protect the women who, in service, faith in thee renew: O guide devoted hands of skill, and bless their work within thy will." Another two lines of the verse were penned by Beatrice M. Truitt in 1948.
