The South Shore Art Gallery is hosting Meet the Artists Sept. 13 at 447 Apollo Beach Blvd. in the Harbor Pointe Business Center. More than two dozen local artists will be on hand to show their work and meet the public.

APOLLO BEACH - In the spirit of building public awareness of the arts, a local gallery is hosting an event Saturday to introduce area artisans to residents.

"I recently realized I have a lot of local artists who many people don't know," said Beth Howard, the co-owner and manager of South Shore Gallery. "So I put together this reception to showcase them and their work. It's part of our Life Enrichment Series, which began last December.

"These artists create and handcraft some incredibly unique, high-quality gifts and home decor. You may be surprised by who some of these talented people are."

The reception will begin at 3 p.m. with a seminar on the health benefits of wine by registered nurse Jan Lemmer, a cardiovascular specialist and wine consultant for PRP Wines International. Her discussion will be followed by the Meet the Locals reception from 4 to 6 p.m.

The gallery opened in Ruskin in 2005, primarily to feature furniture and the work of about 20 artists. In October 2007, Howard moved it to a more visible site in Apollo Beach's Harbor Point Business Center.

The new location displays the work of more than 150 North American artists, including paintings, sculpture, jewelry, fabric art, blown glass, pottery, furniture and home decor. Howard has met with about 90 percent of the artists.

"A lot of people feel that they can't afford anything in a gallery," Howard said. "I have items like gift cards starting as little as $2 and furniture going into the thousands. Another reason for having the reception is to make people aware of where we are and all the different items we carry."

The gallery was recently voted Best Gift Shop and Best Art Gallery by readers of the South Shore News & Tribune.
