Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony

The Hillsborough County Veterans Council is hosting a memorial to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park, 3602 U.S. 301 N., Tampa. Contact Mary Ellen Harlan, (813) 245-5261, or the Department of Veterans Affairs, (813) 975-2181.

Gardens In Bloom

The Tampa African Violet Society and Tampa Bay Gesneriad Society are hosting the African Violet and Gesneriad Celebration from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the University of South Florida Botanical Gardens, 4202 E. Fowler Ave.

There will be a plant display and sale, and visitors can learn more about growing African violets and their many cousins.

Let's Go To The Sock Hop

Get out your poodle skirts and pocket combs for the Riverview Memorial VFW Post 8108 Ladies Auxiliary's Back to School Sock Hop to benefit area schools in need of supplies from 6 to 7 p.m.

The event will include dance and hula hoop contests, a cake walk and a competition for best original dress. Cost is $7 and includes dinner.

Diabetes Expo

The American Diabetes Expo takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 N.

Talk to health care experts and get health and nutritional information. The free event includes screenings, cooking demonstrations and activities for children.

The event will also offer workshops, educational sessions and cooking demonstrations in Spanish.

Organic Gardening

Learn the ins and outs of organic gardening from Willow LaMonte, a well-known organic gardener and folk herbalist for 30 years, at 10:30 a.m. at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin.

Learn to nourish a garden through responsible composting, companion planting with herbs, and welcoming beneficial insects. Seating is available for 100.

Xtreme Fighting Championships

The Xtreme Fighting Championships will kick and punch its way into the St. Pete Times Forum at 1 p.m.

The mixed-martial arts event combines jiu-jitsu, karate, judo, boxing, wrestling and tae kwon do.

All Weekend

Sing With Ariel

The sounds of Ariel and Sebastian will come to life when "Sing-Along Little Mermaid" hits the screen at Tampa Theatre, 711 N. Franklin St., Tampa. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Dress as a movie character or wear a movie-inspired outfit so that you can take part in the costume parade. Tickets range from $9.50 to $11.50 and are available at the box office.

Lakewood Ranch Craft Festival

The Main Street at Lakewood Ranch Craft Festival takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 8126 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., Sarasota.

The festival will offer folk art, pottery, handmade jewelry and paintings, to personalized gifts, handmade clothing, scented soaps and body products.
