Longhorns Junior Tackle Does Offense, Defense

RUSKIN - With a new head coach and just one win in its first two years, Lennard High School's varsity football team hopes to establish itself as a force to be reckoned with this season.

One of the players new coach George Edington will be counting on is junior Leroy Campbell.

"I'd say he's one of the leaders on our team," said Edington, who was an assistant coach last year. "He's what being a good student-athlete is about."

Despite losing their opening game 19-14 to King High School, the Longhorns are optimistic about their chances this season.

"We should be good this year," Campbell said. "We have more focus; I think we're more dedicated and we have more experience coming into this year."

Campbell moved to Ruskin from Tampa a year ago, where he played for Middleton High School's football team during his freshman year.

He plays on both sides of the ball for the Longhorns as a defensive and offensive tackle.

Like many of his teammates, Campbell had been playing football long before high school.

"I played in Pop Warner like everybody else and that's how I got into the game," Campbell said.

He plans to attend college and study engineering and business management. He's undecided about which school to attend, but hopes to stay in the state.

"I like playing football and, if I get the chance, I want to keep playing as long as I can," he said.
