RUSKIN - Do you know an outstanding teacher who deserves recognition, someone who instills a sense of national pride in his or her students?
Ruskin Memorial VFW Post 6287 is hosting its annual National Citizenship Education Teacher of the Year contest to recognize three exceptional South Shore teachers - one in elementary school, one in middle school and one in high school, who regularly teach citizenship subjects, such as civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism and who promote America's history, traditions and institutions.
Nominations can be submitted by parents, fellow teachers, supervisors or other interested parties by completing an entry form and describing in 350 words or less why they feel their nominee should win. The narrative should include the teacher's innovative teaching and resource development methods and dedication to education.
Entries must be received at the post at 5120 U.S. 41 N. in Ruskin no later than Nov. 1.
Prizes include cash rewards, commemorative plaques and all-expense-paid trips to Washington to attend the annual VFW and Ladies Auxiliary National Community Service Conference.
Last year's post winner, Carl Weihs of Cypress Creek Elementary School, was awarded a U.S. Savings Bond and an engraved plaque.
