Journey Leads To The Links

RUSKIN - Since its inception less than a year ago, The Journey - Calvary Lutheran Church's youth ministry program - has worked with homeless people in Gibsonton and elderly people in Ruskin and Apollo Beach.

Now the group is hoping to get community support for an upcoming event.

On Oct. 10, the first The Journey at Calvary Golf Classic will take place at the Golf Club at Cypress Creek.

"Our group hasn't been around very long, so we've had students that couldn't afford to go on a couple of our field trips," said Chuck Aden, director of youth and their families at Calvary Lutheran. "If we raise enough money with this tournament, it will help to remedy that situation."

The Journey had its first weekly service March 2, and the group - which is comprised of about 20 middle school and high school students - meets from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

A typical gathering for the group consists of games and food during the first half hour, followed by a worship service with a live band, and teaching and discussion time.

"Everything we do within the group has a purpose, whether it's building relationships or reaching out to the community," Aden said.

Besides benefiting The Journey, this year's tournament also will be dedicated to the memory of Jeff Carter, a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran who died in April.

So far, Aden said there are 16 sponsorships lined up and about 40 golfers registered for the tournament.

He hopes to see that number rise to 100 golfers by tee time. A dinner at the church for the players and sponsors will follow the tournament.

"Our goal is to raise $20,000 for our student ministries," Aden said.
