SUN CITY CENTER - The East Bay High School Alumni Association recently donated money to the school's baseball program and choral group.
Members hope to raise even more money for the school during the organization's fifth annual golf tournament at Club Renaissance May 16.
"This year we scheduled the tournament for the weekend between Mother's Day and Memorial Day to try to draw the highest possible amount of people," said Alberta Killebrew, the alumni association's treasurer.
Killebrew - a graduate of East Bay High School's class of 1960 - is mindful that the tougher economic times may result in a lower turnout for the tournament than in past years.
"We've had 50 to 80 people in past years, but this year we might be happy to get between 40 and 50," she said. "We really are just grateful for anybody who comes out to support us."
Despite being organized by the East Bay High School Alumni Association and bearing the organization's name, anyone can participate in the event.
The tournament will be in a four-person scramble format. In a scramble, each player tees off on each hole. The best of the tee shots is selected, and all players hit their second shots from that spot. After that, the best of the second shots is determined, then all play their third shots from that spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
The day will also feature closest-to-the-pin and putting contests, as well as a silent auction. The event's registration fee will cover tournament play, a catered dinner and windbreakers with the East Bay High School logo.
"All the money we raise goes right back into the school," Killebrew said. "We recently started a scholarship program to help support East Bay and the students any way we can.
"We get a lot of money from our membership fees, but we also rely on the golf tournament."
