RIVERVIEW - Some 2,300 volunteers fanned out across the region April 18 to participate in this year's Great American Cleanup.
They picked up 52,204 pounds of litter and retrieved and recycled another 3,260 pounds of plastic, glass and aluminum.
Among the stranger items found were three toilets, a lawn mower, a dog's leg and a computer that had been ditched in a canal, said Christine Commerce, executive director of Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful.
The nonprofit anti-litter organization organizes Hillsborough's participation in the annual cleanup.
Volunteers also found a horseshoe crab entangled in fishing line and a freshwater turtle trapped in a discarded pair of blue jeans.
