There's more to boating than simply turning on the motor and taking off over the water. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 74 of Brandon can help you learn the ropes.
The auxiliary will host Boating Skills & Seamanship programs during the coming months for beginning or experienced boaters, covering topics designed to improve the skills boaters need to safely enjoy time on the water.
Successfully passing the course qualifies participants to apply for a state-issued boating education ID card, which some insurance companies recognize for discounts on boat insurance premiums. Class size will be limited, so pre-registration is suggested.
The flotilla also offers an American Boating Safety course the third Saturday of each month. This eight-hour program covers basic boating safety practices and qualifies participants to apply for the state ID card when completed with a passing score.
For dates, times, location and cost of either program, call 1-800-704-4216 or visit www.cgaux74.org.
On the first and third Saturdays of each month, the flotilla performs free vessel safety checks at Williams Park, where U.S. 41 meets the Alafia River in Riverview. Inspections are designed to ensure boaters have the proper equipment for a safe day on the water. While not mandatory, they are highly recommended and performed by trained and certified auxiliary personnel.
