BRANDON - The Pink Stars don't have breast cancer, but it motivates them. And they hope to raise $1,500 this year to fight the disease - with the community's help.

The Pink Stars Breast Cancer Team was formed in 2006 by a couple of students from the University of South Florida. The group started out with just a couple of close friends but has now grown as more people have shown interest in helping breast cancer patients.

Each year members participate in the Komen Suncoast Race for the Cure 5K run/walk, one of the biggest breast cancer fundraisers in the Tampa Bay area.

Proceeds benefit breast cancer research, and 75 percent of donations are distributed locally.

The money pays for community-based breast cancer health education, screening and treatment for the medically underserved.

The Pink Stars started off 2009 by hosting an ice cream social at PlayMania in Riverview Jan. 18.

More than 30 people attended the event, and the team collected more than $100.

The team will host another ice cream social at PlayMania June 14.

Other fundraising events this year are the sale of Village Inn pie gift certificates and 2010 Entertainment Books. The pie certificates are $10 each and do not expire.

The Entertainment Books are $20 each and will be available in August, but the Pink Stars are taking early orders now.

The Pink Stars will make team shirts again this year and are looking for sponsors who would like to make donations in exchange for having their business logo printed on the back of the shirts.

PlayMania and Planet Beach already have signed up as sponsors.

The deadline for shirt orders is April 6. They cost $10.

Vanessa Cain is a founding member and team captain of The Pink Stars. She can be reached at pinkstars@rocketmail.com.
