Lennard High Interact Club Promotes Integrity, Leadership

RUSKIN - David Madden, president of the South Shore Rotary Club, presented a charter, bell and podium to Montello Hobley, president of the new Interact Club at Lennard High School, on Jan. 21 during a combined meeting of the two clubs. Faculty sponsor Lauren Hammond and the Rotary Club-Interact liaison Melissa Morgan also were present.

Interact Clubs are service clubs that reinforce personal integrity and leadership skills in students ages 14 to 18 and receive guidance and assistance from sponsoring Rotary clubs but support and govern themselves. The school-based clubs must do at least two annual service projects.

Guests and members of other Rotary clubs are welcome to attend any meeting of the Rotary Club of South Shore at noon Wednesdays at The Golf Club at Cypress Creek, 1011 Cypress Village Blvd. Upcoming meetings will include Hal Ott, owner of the Ruskin Animal Hospital and Cat Clinic, who will talk about the club's service work in Haiti on Feb. 11; a business meeting Feb. 18; and April Schiff of Strategic Solutions of Tampa, who will discuss the 2010 elections Feb. 25.

Tuskegee Airman To Speak At Library

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Hiram E. Mann, who flew 48 missions in World War II with the 332nd Fighter Group, 12th Air Force, from the Tuskegee Army Air Field, Ala., will speak at 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the South Shore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, as part of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library System's Black History Month celebration.

Mann will share his experience of being one of the first black military airmen trained at Tuskegee. He was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by former President George W. Bush in 2008.

Co-sponsored by the Friends of the South Shore Regional Library, Friends of the Library Development Committee and Friends of the New Tampa Regional Library, the event is free to the public. For information, call (813) 273-3652 or go to www .hcplc.org.

Democratic Club Meeting Thursday

SUN CITY CENTER - More than 120 members and guests attended the South Shore Democratic Club's potluck luncheon to watch the inauguration of President Barack Obama on Jan. 20.

The club invites all Democrats and like-minded citizens to join them for monthly meetings at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce, 1651 Sun City Center Plaza. Julianne M. Holt, public defender for the 13th Judicial Circuit, will speak.

Concert Band Seeks Members

SUN CITY CENTER - The South Shore Concert Band invites interested musicians of any age who like to play concert music to join the band.

The band's concert season spans fall, winter and spring, with shows in the south Hillsborough County and north Manatee County areas, including a finale in April in Sun City Center.

The group has almost 40 members and rehearses under the direction of Edwin Nawrock at 7 p.m. Mondays in the music room of United Community Church, 1501 La Jolla Ave.

Club Names February Artist

SUN CITY CENTER - Diane Simon of Kings Point is the Art Club of Sun City Center's Artist of the Month for February. She teaches watercolor classes in Sun City Center and Kings Point and paints commissioned works of most subjects other than portraits.

Her vibrantly colored pictures will be on display through February at the Sun City Center Library, Sun City Center Chamber of Commerce, Sun Trust Bank, A-1 Connection Realty, Inc., Wachovia Securities Corporate and Investment Banking, Sun City Center Golf and Racquet Club, BankUnited, Sun City Center Visitors Center and in the Art Room showcase.

Veterans Invited To Dance, Social

SUN CITY CENTER - Veterans of any service branch and guests are invited to the annual Sun City Center Veterans Dinner Dance, beginning with a social hour at 5 and dinner at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Sun City Center Community Association in the Florida Room, 955 North Course Lane.

Marc's Music will provide music for dancing after the prime rib dinner by Banquet Masters Catering. The Sun City Center Barbershop Quartet also will perform.

Dress is safari casual; no shorts. Guests may bring their own drinks and set-ups.
