Published: February 18, 2009

RIVERVIEW - A little more than a month after its annual awards banquet, the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce will turn its attention to one of its longest-running events.

The chamber will host its 15th Annual Golf Tournament March 7 at the Summerfield Crossings Golf Club.

More than 100 players are expected to participate.

"We've got people registering right now, but we're hoping to get about 120 people out there by the day of the tournament, which would be on par with past years," said Ryan Esto, tournament director.

The tournament will have a four-player scramble format in which each team member tees off and the group chooses the best result as the position from which to hit the next shot. The procedure is followed until the hole is completed. Four-player teams and individual players are welcome.

The event also will feature several golf-related challenges, including contests for hitting the ball closest to the pin, the longest drive and best putting.

Prizes will be presented at an awards dinner following the tournament.

Proceeds will go to the Riverview chamber, which recently raised $15,973 during its honorary mayor's race.

Half the proceeds went to the mayoral candidates' respective charities - Christa Jerome raised $2,896 for the Boys & Girls Club of Riverview and new honorary mayor Aaron Fredricks raised $5,090.50 for the young woman who was attacked at the Bloomingdale Regional Library in April.

"The chamber has various projects that it's involved in throughout the year, so we really appreciate people coming out to our events and supporting us because it allows us to give back to the community."
