RUSKIN - Having completed their inaugural season last month, the South Shore Longhorns have their eye on the future.
"We've had so much interest in the community so far, and we're hoping to continue that in the next year," said Longhorns president Dean Walters.
The South Shore Longhorns - known as the South Shore Jr. Longhorns during the first season - is a nonprofit, all-volunteer Pop Warner youth football and cheerleading organization that serves Apollo Beach, Ruskin, Wimauma and surrounding communities.
The first practice of the second season is Aug. 1, but the organization will host a returning player picnic Jan. 17 from noon to 5 p.m. at E.G. Simmons Park, 2401 19th Ave. N.W., Ruskin.
The league hosts practices at the Ruskin Recreation Center and plays games at Lennard High School. Players can register for the upcoming season at the picnic.
Open registration events for new players will follow from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 at the Ruskin Recreation Center, 901 6th St. S.E.
More than 250 players were registered during the first season and played for the league's flag football team, seven tackle football teams and four cheerleading squads. The second season will see the addition of three tackle football teams and more cheerleading squads, depending on how many children register.
"We need more volunteers, coaches, instructors and anyone who has any interest," Walters said.
