Women In The Military Is The Focus Of Meeting

SUN CITY CENTER - Women in the military was the subject of a recent meeting of the General Federation of Women's Club's Sun City Center Woman's Club. Active and retired military at the gathering were recognized and thanked for serving their country.

Tech Sgt. Angela Whitman from MacDill Air Force Base described her job as flight attendant for special missions. She protects and serves the country's four stars, including U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. Central Command. She helps prepare and present their food, accompanies them to and from the plane and oversees their safety while onboard.

Ninety-three-year-old Berneice Herron, a World War II Marine veteran, reminisced about life during the Great Depression and about teaching pilots how to use 50-millimeter guns. Her book, "Dearest Folks: Sister Leatherneck's Letter Excerpts and WWII Experiences," is available at www.amazon.com.

Tails Are Happily Wagging

RUSKIN - Area residents came through over the holidays for the cats and dogs at the Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort no-kill shelter at 1528 27th St., S.E. Donations to the Tree-of-Lights fundraiser will be used to create an area at CARE specifically for small-breed dogs. Supply drives at specialty pet stores Happy Paws and Tails in Riverview and Give A Dog A Bone in Apollo Beach brought in toys and edibles for the animals awaiting new homes.

Interfaith Group Helps Charities

The Interfaith Social Action Council, made up of six area houses of worship, donated more than $80,000 to selected charities.

Among the recipients were LifePath Hospice, the Hope Fund, Samaritan Services, Youth Environmental Services, the Performing Arts Club and local food pantries. Another $92,000 was awarded in scholarships.

Recipients must make formal applications and fulfill requirements set by the council's grants committee. The Nearly New Shop at 1515 Sun City Center Plaza provides the funding for the council's generosity.

Donations, Buyers Needed For Sale

RUSKIN - St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, 705 Ninth St. S.E., will hold a rummage sale inside and outside its parish hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 30 and from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 31. The public is welcome to donate items to sell and to attend the sale and buy.

Items may be dropped off in the pod on the church grounds between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. today through Friday.

Come Out And Play

RUSKIN - The Camp Bayou Outdoor Learning Center, at 4140 24{+t}{+h} St. S.E., will offer many activities - most of which are free - for people of all ages this year.

Who doesn't feel better after exercising and spending time in nature? Moderately paced exercise walks will begin at 9 a.m. Fridays from one of five trailheads.

Highlight tours, in which participants view nature while sitting in a seven-passenger cart, will depart at 10 a.m. each Saturday. Reservations are necessary.

At 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month, the Family Naturalist Program will offer activities and discussions about specific ecological themes listed at http://family naturalists.ning.com.

Open 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, the Paleo Preserve Children's Museum and fossil dig features new exhibits in the Frank A. Garcia Research Library and the Leisey-Casey Discovery Center. Visit http:// paleopreserve.org for details.

The Citizen Science Symposium, part of the Year of Science 2009, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 20 and 21. Participants and adult and teen volunteers are needed.

Sound Chorus Sings For Seniors

The South Shore Sound Chorus, dressed in sparkly, sequined formalwear, brought its women's barbershop carols to Homewood Residence at Freedom Plaza, Sun Terrace Health Care Center and other assisted living facilities in December.

The musical fun continues year round, and the singing group welcomes new members who can rehearse at 7 p.m. Mondays at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 1239 Del Webb Blvd. W.

Ladies Shrine Plans Game Party

The Sonit Court Number 103 of the Ladies' Oriental Shrine of North America will hold a bridge-board-bunko party from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdayin the Sandpiper Room at 95 North Course Lane. Tickets are $5 and include sweets and beverages.

Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
APOLLO BEACH - The Pelican Players will present "Staying Alive," a murder mystery dinner theatre, with cocktails at 5 p.m. and dinner of London broil and chicken Florentine at 6 p.m. Fridayat Apollo's Bistro, 6520 Richie's Way.

The cast includes Paul Hassall as Bruce Leap, Diane Turcotte as Lyza M, Bill Turcotte as John Revolting, Delyse Axinn as Diana Rush, Judy Michael as Gloria Stunnem, Hank Wolf as Andy Warthog, and Rose Ostrander as Detective Cher Homes. The director is Carlyn Postle, assistant director is Jackie Winter and the producer is Rose Ostrander.

Tickets are $32. Proceeds benefit the scholarship fund.
