Citing the economic downturn, the county's water department will close its South Shore customer service center July 2 at the South Shore Regional Service Center, 410 30th St. SE, Ruskin. The four employees at the office will be reassigned to other posts in the water resource department.
The department's other customer service centers at State Road 60 and Falkenburg Road in Brandon and 15610 Premiere Drive in northwest Hillsborough County will remain open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The closing of the South Shore office is one of several steps the water department is taking to trim costs, officials said. The department is seeing a decrease in revenues, and although the number of customers has remained about the same as last year, less water is being bought, officials say.
Foreclosures and an increase in the number of people who default on their bills are also affecting the department.
For information, call the department's customer service number at (813) 272-6680.
