A Gibsonton man escaped injury after his boat caught fire and sank in Tampa Bay this afternoon.
The 38-foot recreational boat eventually sank and is considered a complete loss, authorities said.
The vessel sank as a rescue boats pumped water onto the burning hull. The vessel, a 1998 Fountain named, "Innovation," sank at the mouth of the Alafia River channel into Tampa Bay, authorities said.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, along with Tampa Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard, responded to the call for help.
The vessel's owner, identified as Carlos Vazquez, 4909 Alafia Lane, Gibsonton, was rescued by a Coast Guard boat and was taken to shore at the Williams Park boat ramp. The extent of his injuries, or if he was injured at all, was unknown.
