APOLLO BEACH - Area high school students studying culinary arts will don their colors March 14 at the 17th annual Manatee Festival of the Arts.
They'll compete in teams against each other in a cooking contest at the TECO/Tampa Electric SouthShore Community Events Center at Dickman and Noonan Branch roads.
For the third year, Mosaic Fertilizer LLC is sponsoring the competition, set to start at noon with East Bay, Sickles and Riverview high schools competing.
Last year, Riverview and Sickles tied for first place. Both will defend their titles against East Bay.
The competition enables students to showcase their talents before a panel of professionals and the public in the categories of kitchen practice, presentation, teamwork and variety.
This year's judges will be Lynn Kessel, Table Scraps columnist for the South Shore News & Tribune; Chris Bodensky, executive chef at Circles Restaurant; Louis "Chip" Buck, food service director at South Bay Hospital; and Jay Minzer, owner of Grateful Catering and graduate of The Culinary Institute of America.
Within an hour, the teams must prepare a three-course meal that conforms to nutritional guidelines.
All will be eligible for cash prizes for their respective culinary departments.
The winning team also will be offered an opportunity to shadow the culinary staff for a day at a well-known Tampa restaurant.
