Is There Life After Disaster?

Published: March 4, 2009

SOUTH SHORE - Hillsborough County will hold a series of public meetings to discuss and get comments about a draft of the Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan that organizers have been developing for the past year.

The plan details how the county will redevelop and return to normal after a major disaster, such as a hurricane.

About 90 people - private residents and members of local government agencies, community and social service organizations and citizens groups - have been meeting monthly since last year to draft the plan. It covers topics such as health and social services, housing, land use, infrastructure, environmental restoration, economic redevelopment, financial administration and public outreach.

The final draft will be submitted later this year to the Board of County Commissioners for approval.

Hillsborough County was selected by the Florida Department of Community Affairs to be one of five pilot communities in the state to create long-term, post-disaster redevelopment plans. The Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan is a requirement for all coastal communities and municipalities.

Residents can hear about the plan, look at the draft components and make comments at the meetings.

Meetings in South Shore will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Riverview Branch Library, 10509 Riverview Drive, and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin.

For information about this project or to submit your comments on the plan electronically, go to www.hills boroughcounty.org, click on the "A-Z Index" link and then select "Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan."
