RUSKIN - After a decade of planning, fundraising and construction delays, the families of St. Anne Catholic Church in Ruskin got their new sanctuary.
The 22,000-square-foot church opened for worship Feb. 14, when Bishop Robert N. Lynch of the Diocese of St. Petersburg officiated the Rite of Dedication and celebrated Mass with the Rev. John McEvoy and other priests and deacons. About 1,500 people attended.
With the help of CCS Fundraising of Fort Lauderdale, church members raised the bulk of the $6.3 million price tag. The diocese gave the parish $1.5 million in seed money to get the project started.
The first Mass celebrated at the parish was May 20, 1956. This is the third sanctuary built to accommodate growth.
