RUSKIN - The Lennard High School FFA team, including freshman Lucas Worley, sophomore Ryan Capps, junior Ashley Leonard and senior Kole Peterson, won the 2009 State Nursery and Landscape Career Development Event Feb. 28 at the Pinellas Technical Education Center in St. Petersburg. Erin Elsberry, Lennard High School agriscience and FFA advisor, accompanied the students.

Thirty-four teams from all over Florida competed. The Lennard team will advance to represent Florida in the National Nursery and Landscape CDE at the FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

"I have one graduating senior Peterson on the team," Elsberry said. He is planning to attend Hillsborough Community College's SouthShore campus, "so it will work out for him to come to practices for the national contest. He is committed to the team. We are lucky."

The Nursery and Landscape CDE encourages students to learn about the nursery and landscape industry. Participants must identify plants, insects and diseases, evaluate job sites, interpret landscape plans and deal with equipment maintenance situations.
