Time To Tee Off With South Shore Marauders

SUN CITY CENTER - For the seventh year in a row, the Krewe of the South Shore Marauders will take a break from their pillaging and plundering ways to help area high school students get into college.

The krewe will host its annual golf tournament April 18 at the Renaissance Golf Club, 2121 S. Pebble Beach Blvd., Sun City Center.

Proceeds will benefit the organization's scholarship fund for high school students in South Shore.

"We gear our program toward students who will really benefit from receiving the scholarship," said Jim Boris, chairman of the golf committee. "We try to give it to kids where this money could be the difference between being able to go to college or not."

Established in 2002, the Krewe of South Shore Marauders is a nonprofit organization that supports several charitable causes in the area. In addition to running the scholarship program, the krewe has contributed to Locks of Love, which donates wigs to children who have lost their hair due to illness or treatment, and the Mary & Martha House in Ruskin.

This year, the krewe will give out five $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors at East Bay, Riverview and Lennard high schools. This is the first year Lennard students will be eligible.

Students at those schools may pick up applications at guidance counselors' offices. Winners will be presented with prizes at the tournament.

For the second year, scholarship winners from last year may apply for one of this year's awards.

"We think it's a good way to help the kids stay in college after they get there," Boris said.

The tournament registration fee will cover participation in the 18-hole tourney and a buffet lunch that will feature prizes for golf-related contests throughout the day.

Boris hopes to draw about 90 players this year.
