GIBSONTON - When a South Shore-based flag football league begins play next month, it will be under a new name.
The Tampa Bay Flag Football League - known as the East Bay Flag Football League until two months ago - changed its name to draw more players from all over the region.
"We thought the change in the name would help us appeal to a bigger area and increase participation," said Stuart Switzer, league director.
The league, a nonprofit organization, soon will begin play in two of its divisions.
The league's Friday evening games will kick off April 10 at the Gil Athletic Complex in Riverview, while Sunday afternoon games will start April 19 at Vance V. Vogel Park in Gibsonton. All Friday games will start at 6:30 p.m., and Sunday contests will begin at 3:30 p.m. All players must be 18 or older.
"Eventually, we want to get some leagues going for kids, but for now, we're just going to keep it to adults only," Switzer said.
The league's style of play is four-on-four, with each team having a maximum of eight players on its roster. The regular season will be seven weeks long, with an additional week for the playoffs.
Switzer said that though the league is not co-ed, women are allowed to play. He also hopes to add a 35-and-older league.
"We'd like to get that in there, so that some of us don't have to chase a bunch of 20-year-olds around all the time," Switzer said.
