RIVERVIEW - Senior Kacy Pitt's goal as a member of Riverview High School's girls tennis team is to play well enough to earn a college scholarship.
"It depends on whether we can get scouts to come out, and if they like what they see when I play," Pitt said.
"I'd messed around with tennis before, but I'd never really played," Pitt said. "One of my friends talked to me about it, and it got me really interested."
Pitt took a tennis class at Riverview High and eventually joined the team, where she is already one of the top three players on the squad.
"I find that the players look to the seniors for leadership, but Kacy would be a leader even if she weren't a senior," said Kathy Eckdahl, the girls tennis coach. "She's got a positive attitude, she's very proactive, and she's got a great sense of humor.
"I also have her in my chemistry class, and she has an A, so far."
Pitt credits her extensive experience with a variety of sports for her relatively quick mastery of tennis.
During her time at Riverview High, she has been a goalkeeper for the soccer team, an outside hitter and defensive specialist for the volleyball squad and a quarterback for the flag football team.
"I love sports - always have," Pitt said.
If a tennis scholarship does not come along, Pitt plans on attending Hillsborough Community College before transferring to the University of South Florida. She wants to major in business and minor in criminal justice.
In the meantime, she's focused on improving her tennis game as much as possible before the end of the season.
"I really like the aggression in tennis, and I think we have a pretty good team this year," Pitt said. "The rest of the year should be fun."
