Published: March 25, 2009

WIMAUMA - Attention: dancers, singers, poets, bands and comedians. The DreamBuilders Association of America is looking for you.

On April 11, "New York State of Mind" will be presented from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Valencia Lakes Clubhouse, 16003 Valencia Club Drive, and performers are needed to fill the bill.

Billed as a battle of the bands music competition, contestants will appear before an audience of up to 750 people, vying for cash and other prizes.

"This is our first battle of the bands, which we want to make a series," said Blanche Sullivan, owner of DreamBuilders. "We'd like to make it a series."

Sullivan said the competition will include professionals and amateurs of all ages, but that shouldn't discourage anyone with talent. Participants will be judged on attire, stage presence and their performances by audience vote, which will be points-based. The performers with the highest scores win.

The first-place winner will be awarded $250; second, $100; and third, $50.

The winner also will receive an invitation to perform at the Wesley Chapel Celebration of the Arts at the Shops of Wiregrass on April 19, a one-hour recording session with Sound Prism of Ruskin and the chance to perform in a number of paid engagements.

"It'll be a great way to get lots of exposure," Sullivan said.

Applications are available the Valencia Lakes Clubhouse or the Riverview Chamber of Commerce.

Once accepted, Sullivan or John Jay Anglada, music coordinator for the event, will meet with each participant, and auditions will take place at the SouthShore Regional Library, 15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin, at 2 p.m. Sunday and April 5.

Proceeds from the event will be shared by the Riverview High School chorus and orchestra to help pay for the groups' 2010 trip to Carnegie Hall, United Cerebral Palsy and the Dream Factory.
