RIVERVIEW - About 100 people attended the inaugural Dirt Bag tour Oct. 31 at the Riverview Flower Farm.
Attendees were shown how to plant in pots and learned to install a drip irrigation system from a kit. They also got hands-on experience creating seed pots out of recycled newspaper.
The farm's Florida-friendly plants were also in great supply.
Some tropical varieties of plants, such as purple showers petunia, mystic spires salvia and Cassandra orange marmalade, were presented along with planting and care advice.
The wholesale farm - founded in 1982 by owners Rick and Dave Brown - covers 48 acres over three sites in Riverview and Wimauma. The farm is one of the top perennial growers in Florida, and its flowers, under the brand name Vigoro, are used to supply 150 Home Depots in the state.
Extensive efforts are taken to efficiently use water and fertilizer and eliminate waste and runoff.
