Each pet on this page once belonged to someone who either abandoned or could no longer care for it.
Somehow, they were all lucky enough to end up at the steps of the Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort shelter in Ruskin.
The small, no-kill shelter is a transitional home for about 40 dogs and cats that need to find homes.
The shelter exists to keep unwanted pets off the streets by providing temporary housing and care and low-cost spay and neuter services to pets of low-income families.
CARE relies on support through adoptions, volunteers and donations.
Studies have shown that pets help people reduce stress and live longer through their loyal companionship.
