The Apollo Beach Woman's Club will focus on the culture of Ybor City, when members gather for the Oct. 14 luncheon and meeting.
An author of a trilogy of books centered on Ybor City and a flamenco dancer will be the guests at the fundraising event.
Author Jack Fernandez traces the history of a fictional Spanish family that moves to a sugar plantation outside of Havana, later immigrates to the United States and settles in Ybor City in his books "Conquistadors," "Cafe con Leche" and "Viva Matilde." Copies of the books will be available for purchase at the luncheon. Fernandez is a retired chemistry professor from the University of South Florida.
Maria Esparza, a flamenco dancer with the Columbia Restaurant Dancers, will perform at the event, which will feature traditional Cuban fare.
Starting at 11:30 p.m., the event will be at Doc's Grill at the Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, 13050 Summerfield Blvd., in Riverview. The cost is $25, with proceeds going to the club's scholarship fund in support of college-bound Apollo Beach high school graduates. Reservations are required by Friday to Regina Lesnau at (813) 642-3305.
