RUSKIN - A brutally hot day didn't deter hundreds of art lovers from turning out to the Big Draw-In Oct. 10. And the crowd included more than just Ruskin residents.
"I love this event," said Tiffany Minsal, a student at The Art Institute of Tampa. "A friend told me about it. It's awesome to see creativity everywhere."
The Tampa Museum of Art sponsored a tent filled with activities for school-age children, including cave and marble drawings, Picasso-like self-portraits, Matisse-like collages and wire sculptures.
Co-coordinator Dolores Coe said the tent was among the most popular draws.
Other activities included chalk drawing, mola art with sculptor Sheryl Haler and a papier- and fabric-mache workshop with Sara Peattie. Artist-in-residence Jeanette Urso mingled with visitors and talked about the Big Draw mural that she and about 60 volunteers are painting on Mary and Martha House's Second Hand Rose, a domed building on Shell Point Road.
Sandra Duran of Ruskin brought her two daughters, Genesis, 12, and Grace, 13, to the event.
"My whole family is involved in the Big Draw again this year, including the mural and animation workshop," said Sandra Duran, who also is an artist. "The girls and I had a blast at the puppet workshop. It was so much fun to work with the kids and great for people who thought they didn't have the seed of art in them."
