RUSKIN - Resident John Markowitz, his wife, Beth, and their 4-year-old son, Jack, will ride in the ALS Association Florida Chapter's Tour de Vie on Nov. 7 on the Pinellas Trail. John's mother, Doris, will participate as a virtual rider.
This team, known as the Love Forum Band of Misfits, is riding in memory of Larry Markowitz, Doris' husband of 52 years. "ALS-Lou Gehrig's disease took him much too soon," she said. "Jack was born two months after Larry passed away."
Riders and supporters are needed in this fight to defeat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Get information or donate at www.tourdevie.org.

Cell phones aid soldiers
Cell phones may be traded for prepaid calling cards for soldiers overseas, thanks to the Hillsborough County Security Services Department's Cell Phones for Soldiers drive.
The recycling effort keeps the phones' toxic materials from contaminating landfills and groundwater while helping troops stay in touch with loved ones. More than 2,000 cell phones were exchanged last year for more than 2,000 calling cards.
Cell phones may be dropped off through Jan. 8 at the SouthShore Regional Service Center, 410 30th St. SE, Ruskin.
Brittany Bergquist, 13, and her brother Robbie, 12, of Norwell, Mass., began the nonprofit program, which has raised about $2 million and donated more than 500,000 cards to troops overseas in 5 years.
