Stop and see 'Magnolias'

GIBSONTON - Billed as the "funniest movie ever to make you cry," "Steel Magnolias" was a hit movie in 1989.

And now the East Bay High theatre department will bring the story about the bond between six Southern women in a northwest Louisiana town to South Shore.

Based on a 1987 off-Broadway play by Robert Harling, the production will be presented in the school's auditorium Nov. 5-7.

The all-female cast includes leads Allison Taylor and Brianna Sparklin as Shelby and M'Lynn; Bianca Greene as Truvy; Rachel Jeter as Annelle; Shannon Jenkins as Ouiser; and Erika Pimental as Clairee.

"I acted in this play in college," said drama teacher Krista Pelham. "And now I have the opportunity to direct it."

Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students; admission includes dessert and coffee or punch at intermission. Groups of 10 or more making advance reservations receive the student price for the party.

Pelham said "Steel Magnolias" is the first production of East Bay's theater season.

Students will be presenting John Steinbeck's classic "Of Mice and Men" Feb. 11-13, and the annual spring musical will be May 6-8.

East Bay's Moving Minds Theatre Co., a nonprofit, touring children's theater, will take "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to area elementary schools in November and December.
Middle School Madness 3, which includes an original play and two-day workshop for eighth-graders, will take place in January.

"We hope the community will come out and support each of our productions," Pelham said.
