LAKE PLACID — With a recent $50,000 donation from Glades Electric Cooperation Inc., Recreation Director John Komosa hopes the ongoing work at a baseball field for disabled players will finish up by September. New fences and benches already circle a playing field at June Park, in preparation for the future Miracle League Field. Installation of a special rubberized turf to protect players from injury is scheduled when funding is obtained. The Glades Electric donation goes a long way toward the $250,000 fundraising goal. Things are busy at the Plant City Family YMCA, 1507 YMCA Place. The organization recently launched its 2008 annual giving effort, the Building Strong Kids Campaign. This year's fundraising goal is $110,000. All money raised in the campaign stays in Plant City to help make YMCA membership and programs possible for children and families who could not otherwise afford to participate. ...more

A reception at The Wildlife Gallery raised about $600 on Oct. 6 for a local team of eight women participating in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer 3-Day walk, a 60-mile walk from Friday to Sunday in the Tampa Bay area. Karla Solomon, captain of the team, has set a $4,500 fundraising goal, and each team member has to raise $2,200. The gallery's exhibit, 'Through My Eyes,' runs through October and features 125 photographs of East African wildlife. ...more
