To start this New Year off on the proper footing I decided once again to climb the Mountain of Knowledge and seek, from the great guru, answers to questions that have been bothering me for some time. Some longer that others. Questions like: If Hillary gets the Democratic nod I wonder if Bill will exchange cookie recipes with the Republican First Lady hopeful? Why do people avoid counting their birthdays? If they didn't have them they'd be gone. ...more

SEBRING — Love Hillary or hate her, Sen. Clinton's name was on everyone's lips. Likely voters in the presidential primary were interviewed Friday morning at Lakeshore Mall. Clinton has turned into a politician well known by her first name. "I haven't really honed-in on anyone," said Francis Carson, a registered non-partisan who's from upstate New York. "But it won't be Hillary. "I like Obama, I just don't think he's got the experience," Carson said. He winters in Lake Placid because, unlike his home state Lake Placid, the Florida lake gets no snow. Harold Hoxit, also of Lake Placid, feels just the opposite about Clinton. "I haven't made up my mind, exactly, but I like Hillary. She's a Democrat for one thing, and I like her husband. He did a good job while he was in there, and I think she would too. I think it's time for a change." ...more

In regards to Jim Gulledge's letter I have to say I agree with him 100 percent. I just don't understand people or the press. I know the press is suppose to be people also. But there are times I wonder. I too am very concerned about a man running for president of this country who does not honor its flag. I sent Highlands Today an e-mail I had received on that subject. I did not ask them to print the e-mail. I said I felt this should be looked into an article ran, so the people of Highlands County can make informed choices. I am very well aware of the fact all e-mails you receive aren't factual and I did contact www.snopes before I made such a request. Snopes did say "true" to the story I had been sent. For those of you who may not know, snopes is a site on Internet that will check out a story for you, and let you know if the story is true, partially true or false, so I am not running my mouth about something I know nothing about. Except Mr. Gulledge's letter, I have not seen one word on Sen. Barack Obama. ...more

Without appearing to be sacrilegious to you women, I believe that Oprah Winfrey's credibility has taken a significant hit. She is all gung ho for Barack Obama, presumably because he is black. Certainly he has little in the way of experience or the qualities which we need to lead our country. Here is a man who refuses to salute our flag, nor honor our national anthem, yet he has the gall to ask us to elect him as our president. The sad truth is that many unthinking and misguided Americans would probably vote for him, given the chance. My question is, why? Born a Muslin and still a Muslim, he could only bring disharmony to our country, and we have had only too much of that already. ...more

If you recall, I mentioned in one of my columns a while back that our family was involved in a volunteer group called "A Soldier's Wish List." Members on their own initative send packages to individual troops in Iraq. As a result of our involvement we have become rather friendly with a medic in Bagdad – Sgt. Michael Bone. He considers himself the adopted brother of our daughter. When he can, Mike, who is from North Carolina, will drop us a line either by e-mail or letter. I would like to share with you the following excerpt from his latest letter. "The area we are patrolling and maintaining is getting better. We are doing good things with the people in the area. The battalion that we are in have been doing a lot of med caps which is an event where we go out and set up a sick call for the people of Iraq and help the Iraqi doctors take care of the people. We are also going around and trying to redo a lot of the schools for the children here in Iraq. So what you see on TV is the bad stuff, just know we do good things as well." ...more
